The Alienist:

The alienist Netflix Series

More fiction than reality The alienist tells how a commissioner named Theodore Roosevelt turns to a psychologist to figure out (and catch) a murderer who finds himself with helpless children on the streets of late 19th century New York City. Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning star in this original Netflix investigative and detective drama.

The main character, Dr. Kreizler, is based on a real-life alienist named Dr. Henry Howard Holmes who studied the psychology of murders in the late 1800s. The fictionalized version does not have much resemblance to how Holmes actually was- this portrayal being more focused on creating an interesting story rather than historical accuracy. While some events are true stories, most others are fictionalized for dramatic effect or to better represent what would have happened to keep viewers interested.

While the show takes place about 100 years ago, it uses modern music which detracts from the authenticity of its setting and time period. The choice to use today’s upbeat tunes instead of background noise turned out to be distracting and bothersome during the viewing process.

The alienist is a good show for those who want to try something new and don’t mind some historical inaccuracies.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace:

The assassination of Gianni Versace- mongersmint
Netflix series: The assassination of Gianni Versace

This time yes, The assassination of Gianni Versace brings us a recreation of a real case. This series, framed in the anthology American Crime History, wonderfully tells how one of the most notorious murders in the fashion world’s history happened, the one that killed fashion icon Gianni Versace in 1997. It’s huge. The new series of American Crime Story is a big one, with high expectations due to the fact that it was created by Ryan Murphy after all his success in Nip/Tuck, Glee, and other series.

The case is already famous because director Tom Rob Smith has taken the script from Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S History. And if you don’t know who Versace is, just think about Madonna, Princess Diana, or Naomi Campbell: he was an Italian fashion designer recognized worldwide who gained fame thanks also to his excentricity but for sure not to his looks (as Vogue stated “he has the body of a banker and dresses like a bookie”).

So we’re in 1997 when Versace is killed in front of his home by Andrew Cunanan. The killer used to be part of the high society but became famous for being a party boy and his series of crimes leading him from city to city, which included many homosexual relationships.

The first few episodes are incredibly gripping as they tell the story of Andrew Cunanan’s actions leading up to Gianni Versace’s death on July 15th, 1997. By the time you get through these episodes, you will either be really invested in this series or not at all… because it tells the truth about what actually happened instead of trying to make things look more exciting than possible. This means that events take place which would not have made it into an already believable story in real life.

This series is a very good option to watch if you are looking for a new true crime story with intense connections, twists, and turns in every episode.
