Why have you been so successful in achieving some of your goals, but not others? If you are not sure, you are far from being alone in your confusion. Even successful people have some list of things most successful people do and has acquired great achievements but some of which are quite pathetic in understanding how they did it or why they failed. The intuitive answer (That you were born with certain talents and lacking others) is just one piece of the puzzle.

This research has managed to suggest that successful people achieve their goals not only for what they are but for what they do.

1. Take advantage of the moment to act on your goals.

Given how busy we are, and how many goals we want to accomplish simultaneously, it’s no surprise that we constantly miss opportunities to act on a goal simply because we didn’t see it.

Do you have no time to exercise today? Is there no chance that you can return that call? Achieving your goals means taking advantage of those opportunities before they slip through your fingers.

To take advantage of the moment, decide when and where you will take each action you want to take, in advance. Again, be as specific as you can (e.g., “If it’s Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, I will exercise for 30 minutes before work”). Studies show that this type of planning helps your brain detect and determine opportunities when they appear, increasing your chances of success by 300%.

2. They are aware of how far they want to go.

Achieving your goals also requires honesty and regular monitoring of your progress, if not by others, then by yourself.

If you don’t know how well you’re doing, you can’t adjust your behaviour or your strategies correctly. Check your progress constantly, weekly, or even daily, depending on your goal.

3. They focus on being better, instead of being good.

Accepting the fact that you can change will allow you to make better decisions and reach your full potential. People whose goals are about being better, rather than good, take a more difficult route and appreciate both the journey and the destination.

4. They have value

Courage is the willingness to commit to a long-term goal and to persist when difficulties arise. Studies show that brave and successful people get more education throughout their lives and earn higher degrees in universities.

5. Build Your Willpower Muscle

Your self-control muscle is the same as the other muscles in your body when you don’t exercise much; it weakens over time. But when you exercise it regularly, putting it to good use, it will grow bigger and bigger and more prepared to help you reach your goals.

If you want to become like successful people do,  grow your willpower, face a challenge that requires doing something that you honestly don’t want to do. Quit junk food, do 100 crunches a day, straighten up when you find yourself hunched over, try to learn some new skill. When you find yourself wanting to quit, please don’t do it. Start with just one activity; make a plan for how to act when problems arise. It will be hard at first, but it will get easy, and that is the point. As your willpower grows, you can take on one more challenge to further exercise your self-control.

6. Do not tempt luck

To become like successful people, don’t try to take on two challenges simultaneously if you can avoid it (like quitting smoking and dieting at the same time).  Every successful people know that the pursuit of a goal should not be more difficult than it is.

7. They focus on what they will do, not what they will not do.

Would you like to lose weight successfully, or quit smoking, or stop having a bad temper? So plan how to replace bad habits with good ones, instead of just focusing on bad habits.
