In 2001, a new star was born in the cinematographic firmament: the films of Harry Potter. This character, who had already triumphed with his literary saga, was taken to the cinema by Warner Bros studios; that acquired the rights to the seven novels and turned them into 8 films with great critical and public success between 2001 and 2011.
The author, JK Rowling, was initially reluctant to give up the rights to turn her books into movies but eventually agreed that the scripts were true to the original story. The actors were essentially British in origin. The young protagonists (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint) were chosen after exhaustive castings in schools and colleges in the United Kingdom. At the same time, big names played the adult characters in cinema and the English scene.
The Harry Potter film saga is already a classic of adventure and fantasy family cinema. It has become the second film franchise with the highest box office income since its figures exceed 7 billion dollars worldwide.
harry potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001)
Directed by Chris Columbus, this film presents the magical world in which Harry Potter is involved, an orphan who, on his 11th birthday, discovers that he is the son of two powerful wizards killed by the evil Lord Voldemort. Thus, he enters the prestigious Hogwarts School of Magic, and during his stay, he discovers that the institution houses a mysterious object in its domain, the philosopher’s stone. Together with his best friends, Hermione and Ron, he unravels the mysteries surrounding her theft and Lord Voldemort’s fate and goes on numerous adventures.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
Directed again by Chris Columbus, in the second film in the series, a house-elf shows up at Harry’s uncles’ house before starting his 2nd year at school; the creature warns him not to return to school plot to cause chaos and deaths at Hogwarts. The secret chamber has been opened, and several students suffer attacks without the person responsible for said attacks being identified. Still, the teachers know that the situation is not new and related to the same institute’s founding legend. Along with his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry faces a mystery that endangers Hogwarts Institute’s continuity and discovers more about Lord Voldemort’s past thanks to his personal diary.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
The third film about the young magician’s adventures is directed this time by the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity) and has a darker tone than previous films. The dangerous Sirius Black, a follower of Voldemort, escapes from Azkaban prison to search for Harry Potter. In his inevitable encounter with him, Harry will come across the horrible past of his parents.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
The fourth installment changes director again, this time Mike Newell, who takes the lead. At 14, Harry would like to be a young wizard like the others and dedicate himself to learning new spells, meeting his friends Ron and Hermione, and attending the Quidditch World Cups with them. However, when he arrives at school, a great surprise awaits him that will force him to face the most formidable challenges of his entire life. If you can overcome them, you will have shown that you are no longer a child and ready for the new and exciting experiences that await you in the future.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)
From this film, the saga begins to be directed by David Yates, who will remain until its end. The Order of the Phoenix, the army that Albus Dumbledore created to defeat Voldemort 15 years ago, has resurfaced to face the Death Eaters once again. Although the Ministry of Magic does not accept it, Lord Voldemort has returned to subdue the magical world under his influence. And for that, he first has to murder Harry Potter. As a measure to keep Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix at bay, the minister has decided to introduce Professor Umbridge to Hogwarts, and she will impose a dictatorial regime that will confront several students.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Voldemort is taking control of both the Muggle world and the world of magic, and Hogwarts is no longer the safe place it used to be. Dumbledore knows that the final battle is coming, and so he wants to prepare Harry. To that end, he seeks his old friend and colleague, Professor Horace Slughorn, who he believes has essential information. Meanwhile, romances flourish, and love is everywhere, but tragedy looms over Hogwarts, which may never be as before.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Part 1 (2010)
The first part of the denouement of the wizard Harry Potter saga is a more adult and darker film in which Harry Potter and his friends go on their penultimate adventure before putting an end to the evil Lord Voldemort. Without their teachers and Dumbledore’s protection, the three friends must trust themselves more than ever. But there are dark forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart. In their search, they discover an ancient and forgotten legend: that of the Deathly Hallows. And if this turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks. Meanwhile, Harry is getting closer every day to facing his destiny and fighting the last battle against Voldemort.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Part 2 (2011)
The film saga says goodbye turned into a pure spectacle thanks to 3D technology. After fleeing the Death Eaters traveling through England, and after finding and destroying a Horcrux, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger discover that one is at Hogwarts. Meanwhile, the school, now run by Severus Snape and in the hands of the Death Eaters, picks up the final battle when Lord Voldemort discovers that the young wizard is killing him. Now, Harry is in a race against time to finish off his greatest enemy, or he will be the one to die trying.
Fantastic beasts and where to find them (2016)
After writing the Harry Potter novels, JK Rowling has been the scriptwriter of a new movie that takes us back to a world of magic and fantasy. Eddie Redmayne stars in this adventure as magical zoology expert Newt Scamander, under David Yates’s direction, the director of the last four installments of Harry Potter.
