The 2021 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is Hyundai’s first bespoke electric vehicle, the first under the new Ioniq sub-brand, and the first in a series to come on the Hyundai Group’s new E-GMP platform, which features an impressive 800V architecture allowing higher charging speeds. So far only visible on more expensive luxury EVs.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 sits on a massive 3,000mm long wheelbase, a number that not only dwarfs the wheelbases of many other EVs but is even longer than Hyundai’s Palisade 7-passenger SUV!

It will be offered with a choice of the standard range of 58 kWh, or long-range battery packs of 72.6 kWh, single or bi-electric motors, and will thus offer up to 480 km of range (WLTP, 2WD ), a 0-100 km / h. time of 5.2 seconds (AWD) and go from 10 to 80% charge in just 18 minutes. It is expected to cost around $ 50,000 when it goes on sale in international markets in the first half of 2021.
As for the details, the overall length of the 4635mm Hyundai Ioniq 5 makes it just under 200mm longer than a Tucson, but that 3-meter-long wheelbase will be the main talking point, even improving the Tesla Model X (which has a Wheelbase of 2965mm).
It features a neo-retro SUV / crossover styling inspired by the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe Concept, which we got a taste of in the Hyundai 45 Concept shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2019.
With the wheels pushed to the corners of the car, the Ioniq 5’s evolution of the Sensuous Sportiness design language nicely conceals its long wheelbase and features such as the flap hood (a first for Hyundai), door handles flush, and 20- inch aero wheels contribute to its aerodynamic efficiency.
The fusion of the lines on the sides of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which Hyundai calls “parametric dynamics,” as we saw for the first time on the new generation Tucson, brings immense visual dynamism to the whole without being too picky or complicated.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5’s cabin is designed as an extension of living space, and the front seats feature extendable calf support so owners can stretch out while they wait for their vehicle to charge.
The center console also moves back up to 140mm for added flexibility, while the gear selector is located behind the steering wheel. The cabin has a handful of eco-friendly materials, including natural wools, eco-treated leather, and recycled plastics. A V2L charging port in the second row can also charge high-load electronic components up to 3.6kW, including e-bikes, ovens, and the like.
The 531-liter trunk is complemented by a 571-liter front trunk in 2-wheel-drive models, while all-wheel-drive models have a 24-liter trunk upfront. There are plenty of advanced technologies and a 12-inch infotainment screen, 12-inch instrument display, and augmented reality heads-up display.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 will also debut HDA2 (Highway Driving Assist 2), Hyundai’s advanced driver assistance system.
At the top of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 range is the 72.6 kWh battery variant paired with two electric motors for all-wheel drive, producing a torque of 605 Nm. The claimed performance from 0-100 km / h in 5.2 seconds.
Which drops to 6.1 seconds in the 58 kWh battery variant. The single electric motor variants produce 350 Nm of torque and, together with the 72.6 kWh battery, accelerate to 100 km / h in 7.4 seconds. With the smaller battery, that number drops to 8.5 seconds.
The WLTP range for the single electric motor paired with the large battery is between 470 and 480 km, while Hyundai claims that a five-minute charge can replenish up to 100 km of range. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Ioniq lineup will soon be expanding to include the electric sedan Ioniq 6 and Ioniq 7, a “big SUV.”
